Project Summary:
Problem:
EmMe is a mobile application that helps college athletes monitor their mental health. The app intends to help users to gain visibility in behavioral patterns and to facilitate positive changes. As EmMe prepares for the next phase of its launch, they have identified a lack of adoption.
Solution:
Increase adoption by building upon the trusted relationship between coaches and college athletes, while providing digital and non-digital tools to help support their mental health.
Results:
In this project, we designed a multi-touchpoint strategy to increase mental health awareness, support college athletes with their mental health, and provide digital and non-digital tools, to increase the adoption of EmMe.
Storyboards for multi-touchpoint strategy presentation
“In 2018, researchers who surveyed almost 14,000 first-year college students (in eight countries) found that 35 percent struggled with a mental illness, particularly depression or anxiety.”
The Challenge:
Understand the users and the challenges the user is facing as a college athlete.
Learn what comparable applications are doing in the space, what features are being leveraged, and what features we could potentially leverage in a new design.
Understand what mental health resources were available from colleges and universities while considering HIPAA compliance.
Design a multi-touchpoint strategy to increase the adoption of EmMe.

The Approach:
Secondary Research, Competitive Analysis:
To gain insights on college athletes and mental health by researching mental health organizations, college and university health services, digital and non-digital mental health tools, and other published articles.
Subject Matter Expert Interview:
To gain insights on how medical professionals work with college athletes to support their mental health, what approaches are being leveraged, and what approaches I could potentially leverage in a new design.
Editing the video presentation
“If I can get these youth athletes thinking a little more about it... about how their level of anxiety prior to performance impacts their performance, impacts their heart rate, impacts muscle tension...”

Final Thoughts:
There are multiple challenges facing college athletes and their mental health. A mobile application is one tool that can help, but there is no substitution for the trust relationship between a coach and college athlete.
